Immersive medical training using VR for the UCV

Practical and immersive training in medicine and nursing

The challenge: Maximising experiential learning and practical safety in healthcare training

The main challenge facing the Catholic University of Valencia was to ensure that students on the Medicine and Nursing degree programmes gained real-world practical experience before treating actual patients. To this end, the institution needed a solution capable of reducing procedural errors and boosting the self-confidence of future professionals during their training.

The challenge lay in finding an immersive simulation tool that would enable critical or routine medical situations to be recreated in a safe environment. An intuitive technology was required that would complement theory with truly interactive and self-directed learning outside traditional classrooms.

Thanks to the virtual reality app developed by Innoarea, we have been able to offer our students a training experience that closely resembles reality, enabling them to practise their skills. Our future doctors and nurses will undoubtedly be better prepared now that they have virtually experienced real-life situations.

The solution: Medical Training Platform, an immersive virtual reality simulator for healthcare settings

At Innoarea, we have developed the Medical Training Platform, a bespoke virtual reality software programme designed to train students in a hyper-realistic 3D environment that faithfully recreates an operating theatre. Thanks to the use of VR headsets and their precise, room-scale tracking system, users can interact with surgical instruments and perform procedures with natural visual and tactile feedback.

This solution incorporates intuitive and dynamic interfaces designed to enable students to observe, experiment with and grasp complex concepts independently. The platform offers unlimited features for recreating any type of medical scenario, ensuring a continuous learning curve without compromising patient safety.

Key findings

The implementation of the Medical Training Platform has established the Catholic University of Valencia as a leading and innovative institution within the education and healthcare sectors. By integrating virtual reality into its teaching methods, the UCV has significantly enhanced the appeal of its academic programme and the technical calibre of its graduates.

Students now benefit from an immersive training programme that promotes experiential learning and minimises the error rate in real-world clinical practice. This not only strengthens the university’s value proposition and student recruitment, but also ensures that society receives better-prepared healthcare professionals who are more self-confident.
