Immersive training for the Catholic University of Valencia

VR experience for practical and safe ulcer treatment

The challenge: Enhancing practical training in ulcer treatment

Ulcer care is a complex procedure that requires specific hands-on training. The Catholic University of Valencia was looking for a solution that would allow its Nursing students to practice this process without relying on real patients or the availability of clinical environments. In addition, they needed a tool capable of accurately assessing each student’s individual progress.

The challenge also included creating an immersive environment that simulated realistic clinical situations with different types of wounds, patients, and treatments over time. It was essential for the experience to be intuitive, engaging, and measurable in order to be easily integrated into the academic curriculum.

Thanks to the Virtual Reality app developed by Innoarea Projects, we’ve been able to offer our students a highly realistic option to train and practice their knowledge. Our future doctors and nurses will undoubtedly be better prepared now that they’ve virtually experienced real-life situations.

The solution: Virtual reality training with automated assessment

We developed a virtual reality application where students can practice ulcer treatment in a fully simulated clinical environment. The system includes realistic 3D models of patients and wounds, as well as a treatment timeline that simulates several days of wound evolution. Students make decisions, perform dressings, and face the consequences of their actions—reinforcing practical learning.

In addition, the solution includes a performance tracking system that records students’ mistakes, correct actions, and overall progress, enabling instructors to access detailed reports for each participant. This turns the experience into not only a training tool but also an evaluative one.

Key results

Virtual reality training has significantly improved students’ practical preparation, allowing them to learn in a safe environment with no risk to patients. Student engagement and motivation have increased, leading to a deeper understanding of ulcer care protocols.

Additionally, the assessment system has made it easier to track individual progress, optimizing teaching efforts and enabling personalized feedback. This solution has been successfully integrated into the academic curriculum as an innovative, effective, and scalable tool.
