Augmented Reality for Valencia City Council

This is how local residents will see the future of Valencia in Augmented Reality

The challenge: To communicate Valencia’s urban future in an accessible and engaging way

Communicating complex, large-scale architectural projects to the public often requires a degree of abstraction that hinders public participation. To mark La Valentina 2023, the city’s major urban festival, Valencia City Council needed to show its residents the far-reaching transformations planned for public spaces, such as the new Corredor Verd and the redesign of the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

The real technical and communication challenge lay in providing an immersive and visually clear experience that was accessible to all. It was essential that anyone should be able to view these 3D models and 360° scenes instantly on their own smartphone, without having to download any additional apps or go through complex registration processes.

The solution: Web-based augmented reality at your fingertips via a QR code

At Innoarea, we developed a WebAR-based solution integrated into our Twin AR platform. We created three volumetric 3D models, using solid colours to distinguish between existing buildings and new architectural projects in order to maximise visual understanding. These models were hosted on our servers so that users could project them in AR directly using their mobile phone’s camera via QR codes.

In addition, we designed a 360° immersive experience for the Re-Natura project in the Town Hall Square. Using the rendering, members of the public in the square itself could scan a physical QR code and interact with a panoramic view showing exactly what the space will look like after its refurbishment.

  • Deployment on our own servers to ensure maximum fluidity, speed and accessibility
  • Geometric linking of QR codes to specific physical locations in the city
  • QR codes that can be adapted to any printed format

Key findings

The roll-out of this technology transformed the way residents of Valencia perceived the planned changes to their local area. By removing the barrier of having to download apps, public uptake was immediate and widespread. The combination of augmented reality models on vinyl posters and leaflets offered a unique dual experience: residents could explore the projects both out on the high street and share them with family members in their own homes.

The visual impact of the 360° experience in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento served as a powerful tool for raising awareness and promoting transparency regarding the city’s green transformation. Valencia City Council not only succeeded in effectively communicating the design of key projects such as the Corredor Verd and Re-Natura, but also secured an interactive and durable infrastructure that can be reused in future public engagement campaigns.
