Grand Tour of Catalonia for the Catalan Tourist Board

An immersive virtual reality journey through Catalan heritage

The challenge: Digitising the essence of a territory in an interactive and scalable way

The main challenge was to develop a virtual experience that seamlessly integrated real-time 3D environments, 360° videos and multi-user functionality, while maintaining the authenticity of Catalan culture. An attractive platform was required for a diverse audience that would allow them to connect emotionally with the regional heritage, regardless of the user’s prior familiarity with the technology.

In addition, the project had to be robust and easy to manage for events with high visitor turnover, such as international trade fairs. It was essential to ensure a coherent narrative that would guide tourists through landscapes as varied as those of Tarragona or La Garrotxa, offering a panoramic and detailed view of the Grand Tour of Catalonia itinerary.

The solution: Multiplayer virtual reality for total immersion

We designed a virtual reality experience using 12 HTC VIVE Focus 3 headsets, which enable smooth navigation, high-quality visuals, and real-time interaction between multiple users represented by avatars. This turns tourism promotion into a collaborative and dynamic activity.

The application combines cinematic recordings with drones and 3D environments where users can perform interactive activities, such as virtual wine tasting or fuet sausage making. To ensure its global success, the tool was designed in seven languages and includes an intuitive interface with automatic restart after periods of inactivity.

  • Multi-user environment: social interaction through real-time avatars.
  • Hybrid content: combination of 3D environments with high-resolution 360° videos.
  • Hands-on interactivity: gamified activities such as making local products.
  • Autonomous management: optimised system for events with automatic restart and multilingual support.

Key findings

The project has proven to be a high-impact tourism promotion tool, attracting thousands of visitors and generating positive reactions thanks to its ability to excite and connect with local culture. Its scalable design has allowed the Catalonia brand to be present in strategic markets, from FITUR in Madrid to tourism fairs in Germany and Japan, such as the Osaka World Expo 2025.

Thanks to this technological innovation, the Catalan Tourist Board has succeeded in positioning the Grand Tour of Catalonia as a unique and sustainable destination. The ease with which the experience can be replicated in different contexts ensures that the message of Catalonia’s natural and cultural wealth continues to reach international audiences in an innovative and effective way.
