Digital and interactive exhibition: Holy Chalice Foundation

Holography and interactive games to explore Valencia’s heritage

The challenge: to integrate advanced interactive technology whilst respecting the historic solemnity of the Almudín

The main challenge of this project lay in incorporating state-of-the-art technology into a space of profound architectural and spiritual significance, namely the historic Almudín building. The design of the digital ecosystem and the interfaces had to be visually captivating, yet understated and subtle enough to complement the exhibition without detracting from the solemnity demanded by the Holy Chalice.

From a technical point of view, the greatest challenge lay in the precise calibration of the 3D holographic projection. It was essential to achieve a realistic sense of depth and the appearance of the object floating in mid-air, whilst ensuring smooth tactile interaction and impeccable visibility under the venue’s varying lighting conditions.

The solution: An interactive museum experience and a holographic system

At Innoarea Studios, we developed a suite of bespoke interactive applications and a holographic projection system for the exhibition. A high-fidelity 3D digital replica of the Holy Chalice was created, integrated into a station comprising two synchronised monitors: one dedicated to projecting the three-dimensional hologram into the space and the other a touchscreen monitor allowing the user to control the experience.

To complement the museum display, additional touchscreens with specific functions were installed. Many of these applications allow visitors to explore historical documents, previously unpublished images and audiovisual material at their leisure, enabling them to gain a deeper understanding of the relic’s origins. Furthermore, a quiz-style application was integrated, allowing users to test the knowledge they have acquired during their visit in a fun way. All the systems were designed for continuous public use and feature a bilingual interface (Spanish and English).

  • Real-time synchronisation between a touchscreen control panel and the 3D projection
  • Development of a quiz-style app to consolidate historical knowledge through play
  • Optimised interface for browsing texts, historical archives and multimedia with complete ease
  • Hyper-realistic digitisation of the artefact for virtual inspection from multiple angles

Key findings

The implementation of these technological solutions has revitalised the cultural offering of the Santo Cáliz Visitor Centre, making the exhibition a benchmark for innovation in the museum sector. The perfect combination of the hologram’s visual impact and the depth of the documentary exploration has succeeded in capturing the attention of visitors of all ages, transforming passive viewing into an active and memorable experience of discovery.

Thanks to the inclusion of the interactive quiz, not only has an element of entertainment been added, but the educational nature of the space has also been reinforced, making it easier for visitors to retain the information. Furthermore, the native bilingual adaptation ensures that the city of Valencia’s immense cultural and spiritual heritage transcends language barriers, offering a modern, inclusive and unforgettable experience for all international visitors.
