Inclusive roller coaster for PortAventura World

Virtual reality and motion platforms

The challenge: Breaking down the physical barriers of high-impact attractions

The launch of the roller coaster “Uncharted: The Penitence’s Enigma” was a milestone for PortAventura, but it presented the challenge of being a high-intensity attraction that was not accessible to everyone. The challenge was to translate the dizzying accelerations, unexpected twists and turns, and immersive narrative of the Sony Pictures franchise into an inclusive format.

To achieve this, a technical solution was needed that would eliminate physical access limitations without sacrificing the essence of the attraction. The goal was for any user, regardless of their condition, to be able to immerse themselves in the search for the Aztec treasure with the same level of excitement, visual detail and sense of movement as other visitors.

PortAventura World

Located in the province of Tarragona, it is Spain’s leading tourist resort and amusement park and one of the most important in Europe.

The solution: An immersive replica through virtual reality

Innoarea developed a photorealistic replica of the physical roller coaster using Pico 4 PRO glasses. This device, connected to a computer station, delivers maximum graphic quality and fluidity that captures every detail of the mysterious cave and the effects of the dark ride. The experience is completed with a wheelchair-accessible motion platform that accurately replicates every turn and drop.

The key to the project lies in the perfect synchronisation between visual and kinetic stimuli. The platform’s movements are adjusted to be precise but less abrupt, ensuring a comfortable and safe experience that prevents motion sickness, allowing the user to focus exclusively on the immersive narrative and the adrenaline rush of the ride.

Key findings

The implementation of this project has positioned PortAventura World as an international benchmark in digitalisation and inclusion. By simultaneously launching the physical roller coaster and its Virtual Reality version, the park has demonstrated that technology is the ultimate tool for removing architectural and social barriers in the leisure sector.

Visitors with functional diversity can now enjoy a safe, controlled experience that is, above all, comparable in excitement to that of other users. This project has not only improved customer satisfaction, but also reinforces the brand’s commitment to responsible technological innovation, attracting a more diverse and global audience.
