La Fe University Hospital of Valencia
Smart glasses project for La Fe in Valencia
The València La Fe Health Department is a reference both inside and outside the Valencian Community, both for its healthcare and its teaching and research work. Its motto Innovation, Commitment and Quality is more valid today than ever. This Department represents the union of the pillars of the healthcare experience of nearly 50 years of work of its professionals together with research and teaching. The Hospital Universitario y Politècnico La Fe de Valencia is among the best public hospitals in Europe. Thanks to the smart glasses the Hospital Universitario La Fe de Valencia is able to trace more efficiently the process of elaboration of magistral formulas for cancer patients.
Challenge
The aim of the project, a pioneer worldwide, is to improve traceability in the process of manufacturing master formulas for cancer patients. The challenge is to optimize time by resolving incidents immediately. In addition, to find a tool that can guide laboratory technicians in complex tasks of this type. This will make knowledge sharing available at all times in order to save time and possible errors. The mission is to make the process of elaborating the formulas as efficient as possible, decreasing the chances of mistakes by the technicians, who will feel more confident in their work.
Solution
Thanks to the smart glasses it is possible to achieve the goal of the project. The lab technician is guided through the process by the instructions displayed on the Google Glass screen. The device indicates the components to be added to the formula and records the entire process through markers and the recording of the entire operation. Through the new technologies, lab technicians will have their hands free to work, so the information and processes they have to follow will be easily accessible and always available, ensuring more efficient and safer formulation.
Technology
This project highlights the use of Google Glass augmented reality glasses. The smart glasses allow the visualization of different types of information (e.g. instructions) while leaving the hands free. This technology makes it possible to achieve higher levels of efficiency by reducing errors. It also increases the safety of the processes in which they are used.
