X-VISION: Virtual reality for radiology

Immersive X-ray simulator for vocational training

The challenge: Modernising technical training in diagnostic imaging

Access to real X-ray and computed tomography (CT) equipment is often limited and expensive for vocational training students. Furthermore, the handling of these devices by inexperienced hands carries unnecessary radiation risks and the potential to damage high-precision, high-cost components during the initial learning process.

The CIPFP Ausiàs March needed a tool that would allow students to experiment with the assembly, disassembly and operation of these systems without restriction. The challenge was to create a Project-Based Learning (PBL) environment that was engaging, safe and enabled the technical progress of each student to be assessed on an individual basis.

The solution: X-VISIÓN, a virtual ecosystem for healthcare education

We have developed an immersive virtual reality application that faithfully replicates a radiology suite and a CT scanner. The solution enables students to interact with the X-ray tube, helping them to understand its components and functions through a ‘digital twin’ experience. The software incorporates gamification mechanics to facilitate the resolution of technical problems and real-time decision-making.

To ensure its educational value, the tool offers two modes: practice mode, for guided, error-free learning, and exam mode, for assessing skills. The entire system is integrated with a backend that allows teachers to view students’ results and performance via a dedicated web platform.

100%

Reducing the risks of radiation exposure during the early stages of learning

40%

Improved retention of technical knowledge regarding radiological hardware

60%

Savings on operating costs by avoiding the use of physical equipment

Gafas de realidad virtual Meta Quest 3
  • Realistic simulation of the assembly and disassembly of X-ray tubes
  • A gamified environment based on challenges and diagnostic decision-making
  • Dual modes of use: guided training and assessment (exam mode)
  • Management dashboard for tracking results on the web platform

Key findings

The implementation of X-VISIÓN has transformed the classroom at the CIPFP Ausiàs March into a state-of-the-art facility. Students can now practise tackling complex technical scenarios repeatedly until they have mastered them, which significantly boosts their confidence and professional competence before they move on to placements in real clinical settings.

The project has not only improved students’ STEAM skills but has also strengthened collaboration between schools and technology companies. Thanks to this tool, teachers now have access to an objective, data-driven assessment method, ensuring transformative training that is aligned with the digital reality of modern nuclear medicine.
