Construmadera VR: Virtual Reality in carpentry

VR Simulator for vocational training

The challenge: Breaking down traditional barriers in carpentry training

Vocational training centres specialising in carpentry faced a double obstacle: on the one hand, they lacked large, suitable facilities for assembling heavy frameworks, working at height or handling bulky pieces; on the other hand, the real environment involved safety risks, high costs and dependence on permits. In addition, practical training was limited by timetables, resources and teacher availability.

The challenge was to create a fully immersive training solution that would faithfully recreate the construction site environment, allow practices to be repeated as many times as necessary, and offer objective, rigorous and safe assessment. All this without the need to build physical workshops or interrupt the academic calendar. The aim was for each student to be able to measure, cut, assemble and check wooden structures at any time, with immediate feedback and without compromising safety.

Working with the Innoarea Projects team has been very satisfying, thanks to their expertise, friendly manner and professionalism. They have consistently understood the essence of a vocational training project that has been embodied in the Construmadera VR virtual reality simulator, which is now used by numerous vocational training centres specialising in woodworking.

The solution: Immersive training without limits or physical barriers

We created Construmadera VR, an educational simulator available on PC and virtual reality headsets, designed by Innoarea in collaboration with teaching professionals. The tool reproduces scenarios such as light and heavy timber frame houses, log walls and modular structures, including large pieces and the use of hand and power tools. Through an xAPI plugin integrated with Moodle, each student’s actions are automatically recorded, allowing for accurate assessments without manual intervention.

The system offers two modes: free practice, for learning and repetition; and exam, for measuring performance according to calibrated criteria. In addition, the simulator is distributed free of charge to centres with an educational licence, removing budget and infrastructure barriers. Thanks to this, students enjoy a flexible, accessible and secure experience, and teachers have detailed data for monitoring and continuous improvement.

Key findings

After its implementation at the National Reference Centre for Wood and Cork, the response was overwhelmingly positive. Students showed exceptional commitment from the very first session, repeating exercises without limit in pursuit of perfection. Academies saw the costs associated with assembling real structures cut in half and, most importantly, the number of practice repetitions skyrocketed without exhausting resources.

This level of commitment and efficiency not only improved the students’ technical skills, but also consolidated the centres as benchmarks: by offering safe, affordable and highly effective training, Construmadera VR not only fulfilled its purpose, it exceeded it, positioning Innoarea as the essential choice in educational VR simulators.
