The challenge: Digitally restoring a Gothic masterpiece preserved thousands of kilometres away<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To mark the 600th anniversary of the Generalitat Valenciana, the need arose to bring the Altarpiece of St George from the Centenar de la Ploma \u2013 a key example of 15th-century Valencian Gothic art \u2013 to the public. As the original work is permanently housed at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, it was impossible to physically transport it to Valencia for display alongside other altarpieces at the Museu de Belles Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The challenge lay in overcoming geographical barriers through immersive technology. It was necessary to capture, with millimetre precision, both the visible painted surface and the layers hidden beneath the pigment. All this had to be done whilst maintaining the scientific rigour demanded by historians and conservators, whilst at the same time offering an interactive and accessible experience for the general public.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

This project further democratises access to culture for everyone, whether or not they are able to visit a museum. It symbolises the return of the iconic altarpiece to all Valencians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
